Wharton Global Youth Program engages high school students in a unique Wharton School course that culminates in hands-on community service.
Tax preparation season has taken on new meaning this year for the Wharton Global Youth Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Since January, 15 students from Philadelphia’s Constitution High School who are enrolled in Wharton Global Youth’s credit-bearing Embedded Pre-baccalaureate Program have been taking Introduction to Income Tax Preparation and U.S.Twice a week – in person at Constitution High on Thursdays and virtually each Friday – the students learn about the tax system as it relates to individuals and sole proprietors; tax policy, including deductions, subsidies and credits; and community service. The students, many high school seniors who have part-time jobs that help them see the relationship to income taxes, stay connected to the material with online modules delivered through the Canvas learning platform. In April, they will put their new knowledge into practice when they volunteer with VITA, the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and help prepare tax returns and report taxable income for low-income families in the Philadelphia community. ... For Lauren More, Wharton Global Youth’s director of enrollment management and learning pathways, this unique relationship with local students at Constitution, a public, magnet high school, has been a constructive and positive way to engage with the city.

According to Euractiv, getting rid of the exemptions for private and long-haul flights and taxing all planet-warming emissions created by aviation could mean billions of dollars for the EU. A recent study from Carbon Market Watch found that stripping away these exemptions would increase revenue tenfold and help reduce pollution caused by aviation. On a Reddit post discussing the study's proposed changes, people were divided. Some argued against these exemptions and others felt the changes wouldn't benefit the planet or the general population. One person commented, "Somehow this tax will be avoided by the private jets and the rich and the ones paying the tax will be normal working people that just want to have a vacation once a year."The study suggested that extending emission taxes to all intercontinental commercial flights to and from Europe could result in $130 billion to $485 billion in revenue over the next 15 years.Ultimately, people expressed outrage over the excessive emissions created by air transportation. While removing tax exemptions may have more complicated results than people foresee, it's clear that aviation is weighing on people's climate concerns.

Republicans lowered the effective tax rate for the wealthiest 0.0002 percent of Americans from 30 percent to 24 percent in 2017, and extended the cut this year in Donald Trump's "big, beautiful bill."
The effective tax rate for the U.S. population as a whole is about 30 percent, and for people with the top salaries, it’s about 45 percent. But for the 100 wealthiest Americans, it’s 22 percent, according to a study published Monday by the National Bureau of Economic Research. These drop-offs are correlated in the study specifically with the 2017 Trump tax cuts, also known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.“The tax rate of the top 400 fell significantly at the end of our sample, a period that includes various economic and policy changes, including the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” the researchers note. The study is by Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, economists at the University of California who are two of the foremost experts on global wealth inequality, a trend that has exploded in recent decades. The effective tax rate for the wealthiest 0.0002 percent of Americans — a group that corresponds roughly to the billionaires on the famous Forbes 400 list — fell from 30 percent to 24 percent after…

If I am working under a federal work study at my college and am exempt from tax deductions, do I still have to file taxes for this job?

The 2025 State Tax Competitiveness Index evaluates how well states structure their tax systems and provides a road map for improvement.
The study before you, which has been published as the State Business Tax Climate Index since 2003, has been rebranded as the State Tax Competitiveness Index to better reflect what it assesses: states’ overall tax competitiveness, not just the business tax climate. For more than two decades, the Index has helped policymakers evaluate their tax codes, serving as a road map for reform. Each year, the study underwent methodological refinements—which we always outlined—to capture changing elements of the tax code, like the introduction of global intangible low-taxed income or the design of remote seller taxes following the Supreme Court’s Wayfair decision.Period one, with the exception of Tiebout, included the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s and is summarized succinctly in three survey articles: Due (1961), Oakland (1978), and Wasylenko (1981). Due’s was a polemic against tax giveaways to businesses, and his analytical techniques consisted of basic correlations, interview studies, and the examination of taxes relative to other costs.Bartik’s findings, as well as those of Mark, McGuire, and Papke (2000), and ample anecdotal evidence of the importance of property taxes, buttress the argument for inclusion of a property index devoted to property-type taxes in the Index. By the early 1990s, the literature had expanded sufficiently for Bartik (1991) to identify 57 studies on which to base his literature survey.
